Multi-functional hall at King St. Steven Conservatory, Budapest

Architect: István Károlyi

The director of St. Steven Conservatory, Kalman Zaborszky, decided that he will build a concert hall for his world-famous school. Because financial aid was only available to support the building of a gymnasium, he had to compromise.
Gymnasium and concert hall require different form designs and are hard to reconcile due to their functions. Despite this, the purpose was successfully achieved through “puritan”, minimalist design. Hollow brick surfaces support acoustic qualities of the space. The flat surface reflects sound. The acoustic designer of the project was Eva Arato. Today, the space is an exceptional studio and concert hall.
